As the Freshmen step into their high school life, one of the first things they encounter is the election process for the president and vice-president of the class. This year, the candidates running for president were: Elene Baratashvili, Luka Chkhartishvili, and Ana Tatunashvili. The three of them prepared their speeches and on the 27th of September, they stood in front of their class in the auditorium and presented themselves to prove why they’re the best.
Q: How did you try to get your classmates to vote for you?
Elene Baratashvili: I tried to help them in certain subjects, communicated more with them and explained things, so they’d know that they can come to me whenever they need support.
Luka Chkhartishvili: I thought of good ideas and I made my friend make me a poster, which gave me a lot of support.
Ana Tatunashvili: I didn’t do anything; I just wanted them to vote for whoever they wanted to.
Q: What were your strategies and campaigns?
Elene Baratashvili: I followed my instincts and just went around the school to let my classmates know that I was one of the candidates for president.
Luka Chkhartishvili: I didn’t really have strategies, I just went with what I thought would be best.
Ana Tatunashvili: I haven’t done anything at all.
Q: What made you decide to run for class president?
Elene Baratashvili: I’ve been wanting to be a class president for a while because I believe I’m good at communicating with others and I wanted to create an environment where everyone feels included and connected.
Luka Chkhartishvili: I don’t know, I just wanted to.
Ana Tatunashvili: I don’t know, I just wanted to help our students to improve those problems and to fix them.
Q: What are the main issues you want to focus on as class president?
Elene Baratashvili: Creating more opportunities for students to be engaged and ensuring that we have a welcoming, fun environment.
Luka Chkhartishvili: Us to be a better community and make wishes come true.
Ana Tatunashvili: If I was the president, I would make a lot of parties, kids just love them and also maybe I would change some techniques. Help the kids out, basically.
Q: What advice will you give the students for next year’s student council? Should they try to participate in it?
Elene Baratashvili: I believe everyone should try and become a part of this very important community. As a president, you get to communicate with a lot of people and help organize events. It’s not a complicated role - you just need to be supportive and mindful.
Luka Chkhartishvili: Definitely, and don’t try to make promises you won’t be able to keep.
Ana Tatunashvili: Yes, it’s really fun, and it will get to know kids better, and you’re going to communicate with teachers and students more.
Q: What sets you apart from the other candidates?
Elene Baratashvili: What sets me apart from other candidates is my ability to bring people together and create a community. I genuinely care about making this year the best one.
Luka Chkhartishvili: I won.
Ana Tatunashvili: I actually don’t know.
After the results came out, it was revealed that the president and vice-president of the Freshmen are Luka Chkhartishvili and Elene Baratashvili. Hope they have a successful and productive year! As any election usually goes, opinions about the results differ, depending on who people were supporting. When asked what type of candidates students vote for, some said that they value what the candidate says, so they choose the candidate that had the best speech. Some prefer a candidate who they find most responsible and choose them, but it turns out that they were not happy with the results as the candidate they rooted for did not win. Differences in opinions are natural, so it’s best to hope that by the end of the year no one stays disappointed and the presidents manage to make everyone happy!
